100 proposals cleared in MCD meet, Cong cries foul

100 proposals cleared in MCD meet, Cong cries foul

The battle for wresting power in the three municipal bodies is turning hotter with ruling BJP today clearing over 100 proposals in an MCD meeting, prompting the opposition Congress to cry foul and knock the doors of the Election Commission. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which is now divided into three smaller bodies, will have elections on April 15 and the Model Code of Conduct was enforced from last Monday.
At a meeting of the MCD House, the BJP used its majority in the 272-member body to push through 102 items on the agenda. Majority of the items which were passed in today’s meeting related to schools and promotions of teachers. The MCD also cleared a proposal to release pension to senior citizens, physically challenged persons, which has been pending for the last six months.
Mayor Rajni Abbi had written to MCD Commissioner on Monday asking him when the pensions can be released. “As this (releasing pension) is the obligatory function of the Corporation, it does not benefit a particular party and the same is to be released not by councillors but by sanitary inspectors and this does not come under the ambit of Model Code of Condut,” she said in the letter.
Taking objection to the MCD clearing proposals, Congress councillors have approached State Election Commission and demanded action. “The MCD meeting today have cleared almost all the items in the agenda without any discussion even though Congress councillors have objected to it. We urge you to cancel these decisions as they against the model code of conduct,” Congress councillors, including Ajit Singh Chaudhry and Krishna Murari Yadav, said in the letter to SEC Rakesh Mehta.
